“If I am afraid of the ocean, then I will take a boat out to the middle of the breaks” -Jennifer Cheng
NOA is a visual concept album currently being filmed in Chicago, IL. NOA consists of original music by Taylor Rogers, which serves as the backbone to a cinematic journey through loss and love. Together with Pictureluck Media and a variety of Chicago-based movement artists and storytellers, NOA explores loss as deeply connected to love insofar as it expresses connection to what’s gone. Denying grief also denies the ties that bind us. By spotlighting artists who draw heavily from improvisation and embodied expression, this body of work strives to immerse the listener/viewer in an experience of deep, wordless connection, to make its listeners/viewers feel. NOA asks two questions: what type of knowledge do we gain when we are deeply affected by loss and love, and how do we find a way to communicate that knowledge to others when words (inevitably) fail us?
The project is funded by Northwestern University’s Center for Interdisciplinary Research in the Arts, as part of Taylor’s dissertation, ‘Affective Resistance.’ Affective Resistance is the idea that resisting conditions of domination and subordination requires combatting emotional numbness.
